Pruning refers to the removal of certain branches (limbing), from a tree in order to limit or direct its growth. The term pruning is also used for ornamental arboriculture. There is a distinction between ornamental pruning, fruit pruning, and silvicultural pruning.

Pruning can also be a natural biological process that involves the abandonment of branches or a part of the crown (crown descend) in order to maximize the tree’s energy and resources. This is called natural pruning. It is the process of selecting the branches of a tree, without any human intervention, due climatic events, lack of light, water, or the action of specialized saprophytic mushrooms.
